School Lunch Program

I want to encourage families that qualify to take advantage of the federal free and reduced lunch program. The school receives more reimbursement from the program for meals served to students using the program than we do for students that pay full cost for their meals. The additional income helps offset food and labor costs and may very well delay future lunch price increases. It also saves families money! Both the school and the families come out ahead in this situation.

If your family income level changes during the school year, you may apply at any time. If you are affected by an extended layoff or change in your employment status, you may qualify for the program when you did not previously. Contact the Superintendent's Office for more information 563-547-2762 or toll-free at 1-866-540-2762.

With our plastic lunch cards, there is no way for anyone to tell whether a student is paying full price for meals or using the free/reduced lunch program.

With the same PowerSchool login that you use to check your child's grades and attendance, you can check the lunch balance, too. If you see that the balance is getting low, SchoolPay is a quick and easy way to add money to the account.

To enable parents to check grades, attendance, and lunch balance as well as to add money with SchoolPay, some information will have to be provided to allow District Technology Staff to set up your account. If you did not attend the Howard-Winneshiek school system last year or have not yet provided the information, you may do so at any time.

You will be required to login to PowerSchool using your school password. After you login, the process is pretty straightforward.

Occasionally, some students choose to eat a second full meal, particularly when a favorite meal is served. When a student eats a second meal, the student must pay the full adult price, because there is no reimbursement from the federal lunch program for any second meal or any adult meal. All second meals that are purchased must be paid in cash at the lunch line. Students will not be allowed to purchase a second meal with their lunch card.
